Okay so as you most likely know I been watching a ton of Fullmetal Alchemist. Well seeing I finished that series I decided to move on the the new 2009 series, Brotherhood. To see what its like and how it compares to my beloved original. Note: This post won't spoilers well nothing huge like when Edward kills his brother that won't be there. Also that didn't happen.
I would have to say being only 13 episodes into FMA: Brotherhood that it is definitely weaking in comparison to the first series. First off I think its loosely based around the manga but a lot more so than the first seeing the difference in the main villian which changed in the 2003 anime. This series goes back to the original villian of manga. I haven't read a lot of the Fullmetal manga but I think everything about this series is abridged. Generally the problem with condensing animes with remakes is that you lose the time necessary for you to really get to know the characters, even with the main characters I find myself not giving a hell weather they die or not.
In original series the pacing was perfect. You got to know the characters, it wasn't drawn out and it never seemed that they were rushing to get the story by in the least number of episodes. In the 2009 series its way to fast. If you watch both the series' you'll really notice the loss of depth and you won't feel as in touch as the first.
Its not all bad news the first opening you get the Brotherhood series is awesome! the series is still really good if you like reading the subtitles seeing I don't think it will get a dubbed release. Currently the series is up to episode 35 as I write. If its loosely following how the previous series story ran in an abridged format it should be over by now but seeing it maybe the manga it could go a lot longer. I'm guessing there is probably a crap ton of manga chapters and they don't want to end up with hundreds of episodes. In conclusion both are really good series but if you want more depth and to get to know the characters I would watch the original series or read the manga.
